National Director's June 2017 Update
Updated On: Jun 179, 2017

June 28, 2017

Dear Members:

We are pleased to announce that the AMFA National Office has been relocated to 7853 East Arapahoe Court, Suite 1100, Centennial, CO 80112. The phone and fax numbers will remain the same. The move was completed this past week, and we are up and running and fully operational.

The National Executive Council (NEC) continues our efforts to achieve the best communication practices to reach you including emails, push notifications, as well as website, Facebook, and Twitter posts.  The NEC also continues to conduct station visits throughout the system. We would like to thank everyone who continues to help with transportation at the station and escorts from each of the stations. An informed union member is a strong union member.

Our legislative efforts and activities have heightened over the last several months as we work with Commonwealth Strategic Partners to take a proactive approach to issue that affect our craft. Justin Madden, Legislative Affairs Director has given the following statement as a small recap of our current legislative activities: “The Association regularly monitors legislative issues that affect our craft, and recently, the House approved a bill that involves airport worker security screening.  Among many things, it tasks the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) with tightening up security at US airports, and is in direct response to a government report which indicated that “insiders” were the greatest threat to airport security.   It is obvious that the push is towards more physical screening for airport employees, and we are aware of the significance to both you and your respective carriers. The legislation is now with the Senate, and we are watching it very closely to determine what the final impact might be.  The draft FAA Reauthorization Bill (both House and Senate versions) has also recently been introduced, and AMFA is reading through them to determine their significance to you.  Please read the monthly legislative reports for updates on the status of our legislative activity.”

We are scheduling meetings in the near future with the AMFA–Alaska Airlines Integration Committee and Virgin American Integration Committee to discuss the upcoming integration process of the two workgroups. We will continue to keep you informed as future meeting dates are scheduled and as we proceed through this process.

We have been in Aircraft Maintenance Technician negotiations with Southwest Airlines for nearly five years – 1,777 days to be exact. Negotiations continued this month with a mediated session on June 20-22 in Dallas, TX. The AMFA Negotiation Committee addressed and again proposed scope language, and they also accepted a cover-to-cover economics proposal by the Company. We are preparing to deliver a comprehensive counterproposal at or before the next session scheduled for July 17, 18, and 19. Negotiation updates for all sessions have been posted to the AMFA National Website.

Please stay engaged, and thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Bret Oestreich
National Director
