National Director's December 2015 Update
Updated On: Jan 02, 2016

December 31, 2015

Dear Members:

I wish each of you a Happy and Safe New Year! This month began with AMFA entering our first session of mediated contract negotiations for the Southwest Airlines (SWA) Aircraft Maintenance Technician’s contract. This session was our first opportunity to get to work with our mediator managing the process. It is clear that both sides are bringing focus to the table and are prepared to work with the mediator to move proposals forward. As mentioned in the Committee’s posted update, our next meeting will be in Washington, D.C. during the first week of January. I received a question from one of our Local leaders who mentioned that members had asked him why we were still negotiating items in Article 21, Grievance Procedures, and there was a perception on “the floor” that because we’re in mediations, we must be down to strictly economic issues. The short answer is absolutely not; every single open issue that has not been tentatively agreed to as referenced throughout the updates remains open and must be resolved before we have a comprehensive Tentative Agreement to present to the members. Your Committee has done a tremendous amount of work over the past 3 ½ years representing your interests, and has no intention of letting the members down as we enter into this next phase of the process. The SWA Facility Maintenance Technician negotiations are tentatively scheduled to resume on January 28, 2016.

At Alaska Airlines (ASA) we met with the Company on the afternoon of December 21, 2015 and exchanged opening contract proposals in Seattle, Washington. Each side presented a comprehensive list of the items they intend to bring forward in our negotiations. We also scheduled meeting dates through March of 2016 and set the tentative locations of Seattle, Anchorage, and Portland, so please be sure to check with your local representative for observer opportunities. The Negotiations Update has been posted to the website.

AMFA National Safety and Standards Director, Local’s 14 and 32 Safety and Standards Chairmen, AMFA-ASA ASAP Representative, Region I Director, and I also met the morning of December 21, 2015 with senior ASA Maintenance and Engineering management representatives to continue discussions regarding enhancing safety awareness opportunities and how we can work collectively to identify and correct safety concerns using a proactive approach before they escalate to an event.

Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.

Sincerely,

Louie Key
