The ability of working men and women to collectively withhold their labour in order to improve their lives has been described as a “sacred” right under the Canadian Constitution.
That right is now under assault by WestJet. Having threatened its AMEs with an imminent lockout, the Company is now asking the CIRB to issue an injunction barring us from responding in kind.
During the negotiations, FMCS representatives openly scoffed at the notion of compulsory arbitration and described such an action as completely unprecedented. If the CIRB adheres to past practice and existing precedent, our strike will commence June 20 at 9:00 p.m. as authorized by your 99 percent vote.
Having canceled agreed-to dates for continued bargaining on June 19-20, WestJet continues to refuse to negotiate. AMFA intends to file charges with the CIRB related to this ongoing refusal.
If the CIRB enjoins the strike, we will comply with its order and seek an appeal.
Refrain from all job actions until our right to strike has been confirmed by the CIRB.
Fraternally,
AMFA-WestJet Negotiating Committee
