AMFA-Southwest Airlines Members Overwhelmingly Reject Tentative Agreement

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – July 5, 2022 –Last week, Southwest Airlines (SWA) Aircraft Appearance Technicians (AATs) overwhelmingly rejected a tentative agreement (TA) put forth for a ratification vote.

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) National Executive Council believes the AATs rejected the contract because the economic package fell short of expectations. AMFA will survey the membership to confirm the reason for the rejection over the next few weeks.

“The AMFA-SWA Appearance Technicians deserve a compensation package that reflects their value and relevance as essential frontline workers,” explains AMFA National President Bret Oestreich. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, these employees have been responsible for cleaning and disinfecting the Southwest Airlines aircraft to keep passengers safe and hazards at bay. With the shortage of AATs and competition within the industry, it’s justifiable that these employees expect to be rewarded for their selfless efforts and contributions to the success of Southwest Airlines.”

Oestreich says, “Southwest has acknowledged problems retaining qualified, skilled aircraft cleaners.” And that the company has trouble “filling vacant staff positions throughout the system because wages are not competitive enough.”

AMFA believes that this is a critical time for Southwest to show they value these skilled professionals and an opportunity for the company to reward their essential frontline workers. “The dedication of this group remains steadfast in providing the cleanest and most sanitary aircraft each day,” said Oestreich. “It’s time Southwest show them the respect they deserve.”
