| OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH |
|
|
According to the National Cancer Society each year more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer.
In 2013, an estimated 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed among U.S. women, as well as an estimated 64,640 additional of in situ breast cancer.
But, early detection can help. Mammograms can help find breast cancer early, when treatments are more likely to be successful. If you are 40 or older, get a mammogram every year and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
BREAST CANCER DOESN'T DISCRIMINATE
In 2008 after ignoring some basic symptoms for about 4 months, Harvey Singer was diagnosed with breast cancer. Singer, founder of HIS breast cancer awareness (www.hisbreastcancer.org), was 54 years old and shocked that, as a male, he could contract this disease.
In 2014 it is estimated that almost 2,500 new cases of invasive breast cancer in men will be diagnosed. Don't delay seeing a health care provider.

Have you ever heard of the Grievance Committee? Did you know that every local is required by the Constitution (Article 13, Section 10) and their Local Bylaws to have a Grievance Committee? This Committee is comprised of the Local Executive Council (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Safety Standards Chairman) along with the carrier-specific Local Airline Representative (ALR). The Local President is the Chairman of the Grievance Committee.
Now that we know who composes this Committee, let me explain what this Committee is not. It does not handle grievances through all the different contractual steps. The contractual steps of the grievance process are the responsibility of the Shop Representatives, Area Representatives, and ALRs. The Grievance Committee’s main focus is to address the grievance when it has come to a point where the ALR is unable to resolve the dispute with the company, and the case is being considered to have a neutral third party resolve the dispute. This neutral third party is called the arbitrator, who in most cases is a lawyer or judge that specializes in labor law.
When it comes time for an ALR to submit a grievance to the Grievance Committee, the ALR will present it to the Local President. The Local President, also known as the Chairman of the Grievance Committee, will then convene a meeting of the Committee to determine the outcome of the grievance. While reviewing the case, the Grievance Committee understands that any ruling from the neutral third party arbitrator will be binding and precedent-setting. The Committee will look at the merits of the grievance, evidence, and chance of winning before determining whether or not to fund an arbitration.
During this review of the case, the Committee may ask for input from Shop Representatives, Area Representatives, legal counsel, and even the grievant in some cases. If the Committee determines to fund the arbitration, the ALR together with legal counsel will schedule a date with the company for the arbitration. If the Committee determines not to fund the grievance to arbitration after reviewing the evidence and consulting with legal counsel, the grievant will be sent a letter explaining this decision and that if they wish to go forward to arbitration they would have to fund the case on their own. With either outcome, the Grievance Committee has fulfilled their duties per the AMFA Constitution.
