By Michael P. Nelson, Region II Director
Region II is currently comprised of three locals: 4, 11, and 18. At the National level, we have had the privilege to be involved in the reestablishment of Local 4. Those guys have put a lot of hard work into making it happen and it was an honor to be present when they received their Charter as well as to attend their first General Membership Meeting and officer swear-in at Chicago.
We have also been able to spend time with the Local Presidents and their Local Executive Councils (LEC) at several General Membership Meetings and at the two Joint Advisory Council (JAC) Meetings. As the Region II Director, I am a liaison between the locals in Region II and the National Executive Council (NEC); I invite but do not seek-out local issues. That is one of the primary purposes of the JAC meetings.
In regards to negotiations, our Southwest Airlines (SWA) members have the Mechanic and Facility Maintenance groups open for contract discussions. The Mechanic’s scheduled negotiation sessions have been reallocated since April to allow the Airline Representatives a chance to work with the Company to try and find an alternative to forcing eight of our Brothers and their families to leave their homes. At this time we do have another Mechanic negotiation session scheduled for July 17 and 18. We also have Facility Maintenance negotiations scheduled for July 23 and 24. Updates will be available on the AMFA National Website following any negotiation session. It will also be available via Facebook and Twitter.
I hope this limited and generalized update helps to identify some of the activities that are taking place at your Association’s National level. Don’t hesitate to call or email if you would like further details to any of the issues that I have presented. Please stay informed and support your local officers and representatives.
