The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) Local 605 issued the following statement today on behalf of its Canadian members:
Like all Canadians – and many Americans – our members are watching with great concern the escalation of tariffs and counter-tariffs between two great trading partners.
We urge both governments to keep the following two key areas in mind as this situation continues to develop:
First, like all Canadians, our 1,800 members will be directly affected by these potential tariffs. A rise in the cost of living could reduce travel demand across Canada and the United States—placing added pressure on airlines and potentially affecting aviation jobs on both sides of the border. AMFA members work tirelessly every day to keep aircraft safe and ensure the protection of the flying public
AMFA’s first priority is and always will be the well-being and safety of our members.
Secondly, we are concerned about the potential impact of tariffs on the availability of critical aircraft equipment, tooling, and parts required for our members to perform essential, safety-critical aircraft maintenance work on Canadian-registered Aircraft.
WestJet Airlines CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech, recently spoke with AMFA regarding challenges in sourcing and distributing aircraft parts needed to maintain and repair their all-Boeing fleet.
We urge both the United States and Canadian governments to collaborate closely to identify which specific Boeing parts may be affected and explore solutions to ensure these essential components can be sourced without disruption—including potential tariff exemptions where necessary.
Like most North Americans, AMFA members hope that this dispute will be resolved to the satisfaction of both governments and that the greatest trading relationship in the world will be restored.
