Statement of Support for the FAA SMS Compliance Review Act of 2026
Jan 26, 2026

January 26, 2026

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), representing more than 4,400 Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) across the United States, reaffirmed its support for safety initiatives that strengthen reporting, ensure compliance, fortify frontline workers, and continuously improve aviation safety outcomes.

AMFA recognizes that effective Safety Management Systems (SMS) depend on meaningful employee participation, transparent communication, and the use of safety data for improvement—not punishment. These principles align with the goals of the FAA SMS Compliance Review Act of 2026, which seeks to verify that safety systems are working as intended across the aviation industry.

“Frontline aviation maintenance professionals are the backbone of aviation safety,” said Bret Oestreich, National President of AMFA. “The FAA SMS Compliance Review Act of 2026 reinforces the principle that safety management systems must be trustworthy and dependable for the professionals on the frontline. When technicians are empowered to report hazards without fear of reprisal, the entire safety system becomes reliable and safer. Strong oversight, protect confidentiality, and a focus on fixing systemic issues—not blaming workers—are essential to a safety culture that truly delivers results.”

AMFA looks forward to continued engagement with regulators, industry partners, and the workforce to support policies that proactively reinforce safety culture, strengthen oversight, and uphold the critical role of licensed aviation maintenance professionals.

On Behalf of AMFA National,

Robert R. Cush
Director of Government Affairs
