AMFA-Air Canada Filing Update #1
Apr 25, 2025

January 13, 2025

Dear Air Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Skilled Trade Professionals:

We are pleased to announce that the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) has officially filed an Application for Representation with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) on behalf of your workgroup. This is a significant step as AMFA’s filing included documents indicating that more than 93% of AMEs are interested in AMFA as your union representative. Most importantly, it marks the assembling of steps toward achieving craft-specific representation for all Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) and skilled trade professionals at Air Canada.

AMFA’s mission is to provide a focused and craft/trade-specific approach that prioritizes your profession's unique needs and challenges–without the distractions of other trades or unrelated industries–ensuring that the specialized nature of your work is recognized. AMFA's “one craft/trade, one union” philosophy fosters solidarity, and it ensures that the union’s efforts and resources are exclusively directed toward advancing the specific interests of the AME and skilled trade professionals. AMFA’s craft/trade-specific concentration and representation success has been recognized in Canada by the skilled trade professionals at L3 Harris, WestJet, Calm Air, Jazz Aviation Line Mx, Jazz Technical Services, and now you at Air Canada.

The filing of this application demonstrates your Organizing Committee's commitment and fortitude to your interests as skilled aircraft maintenance professionals, and this milestone reflects their dedication to ensuring your voice is heard and your profession is valued.

The CIRB will now review the application and your defined unit. During this process, AMFA will work to ensure all requirements are met and that the voices of Air Canada's AMEs and skilled trade group professionals are accurately represented. We expect significant resistance from your current union representation concerning this systemwide grassroots movement, but with your help and engagement, we are confident that your skills and collective voice will lead to a successful result.

We encourage you to stay informed and engaged as we move forward together, as your participation is vital to the success of this initiative. Here’s how you can stay involved:

  • Stay Informed: monitor internal chats, review updates from the Organizing Committee, and visit the AMFA at Air Canada page on the AMFA website
  • Ask Questions: reach out to your Organizing Committee for any clarifications or information
  • Spread the Word: share this important development with your colleagues

Please reach out to your AMFA Organizing Committee directly if you have any questions and/or concerns. We are here to support you every step of the way.

In Unity,

Bret Oestreich
National President
