Dear AMFA-Represented Members at Alaska Airlines & Future Hawaiian Members:
We have received reports of alarm and consternation from our Alaska members that IAM agents have, yet again, been knocking at their doors and pressing them to sign authorization cards. Although anticipated and addressed in prior AMFA communications, these recent complaints prompt us to address the issue again in the context of the current single-carrier integration process.
On May 12, 2025, AMFA filed an application with the National Mediation Board (NMB) for a determination that Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines constitute a single carrier for purposes of representing Mechanics and Related Employees. The NMB held the two airlines constitute a single carrier and gave the IAM until August 29, 2025 – this Friday – to provide a showing of interest that would entitle that organization to be on the ballot.
AMFA has already satisfied its showing of interest requirement by submitting evidence of the active membership of nearly 1,100 Alaska employees and authorization cards voluntarily submitted to AMFA by over 120 Hawaiian Mechanics and Related Employees.
The NMB will credit the IAM with the tacit support of its current Hawaiian membership. Consequently, in order to earn a place on the election ballot, the IAM is required to obtain approximately 75 authorization cards from Alaska employees in our craft or class.
In view of the aggressive knocks on doors, as of August 26, it would appear the IAM had not yet achieved this modest goal. Nevertheless, in view of the resources it is pouring into the effort, the IAM may obtain the requisite 75 cards by Friday, which would result in an inter-union election. It will then be up to you to decide which union you wish to authorize to negotiate your wages and benefits and oversee the seniority integration process. If the IAM is unable to achieve this modest goal, the election will be between AMFA and a no-union option.
Any further news on this front will be provided to you immediately. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your questions.
Sincerely,
Brandon Statfield, AMFA Local 14 ALR
