Dear Hawaiian Airlines Family,
AMFA cares about your job security, your ability to choose where you work, your working conditions, and the long-term stability of your career. And let us be clear: Choosing AMFA does not put any Hawaiian jobs in danger of being lost or relocated, in the islands or on the mainland.
You’ve probably heard a lot of propaganda from others that is meant to intimidate and mislead you. AMFA is committed to delivering you the facts, grounded in existing contract language and actual outcomes.
Real Protection with AMFA’s LOA #9: Concrete Job Protection Most Unions Don’t Offer
One of the most powerful aspects of the AMFA contract at Alaska Airlines is the job security provided by Letter of Agreement (LOA) #9. This is enforceable contract language that:
Prohibits layoffs, furloughs, or reductions in force for all AMFA-represented employees covered under the CBA as of ratification
Ensures AMFA Members cannot be forced from their work location (station or bid location)
Remains in effect until a new CBA is ratified by the members and can be renegotiated
LOA #9 provides direct legal protection — not vague promises — that keeps layoffs and involuntary moves from happening without your contract being changed. This is one of the many protections that AMFA members enjoy in the contract that they voted in.
Real History: No Layoffs When Alaska Bought Virgin America, Thanks to AMFA
When Alaska Airlines integrated Virgin America into its operations, AMFA didn’t let that transition become a threat to jobs:
AMFA successfully negotiated a transition agreement to bring Virgin America technicians under the AMFA-Alaska contract, preserving jobs and ensuring wage and seniority protections
Technicians from both airlines were integrated into a unified seniority list, ensuring fair treatment for all
No forced layoffs or moves as a result of the agreed-upon transition to integration
In times of pressure — whether economic downturns, airline mergers, or industry restructurings — companies will always look to cut costs first. But when you have legally binding language that restricts the Company from layoffs and forced moves, management can’t simply decide one day to outsource or eliminate your role without facing a contract violation and a fight.
