Hydration, Communication & Documentation

June 23rd was National Hydration Day. Now that summer is officially here, hydration must remain a top priority during our time spent exposed to the heat. In dry climates, it may be more difficult to remain aware due to the lack of perspiration. Our bodies need sufficient water to properly operate. Headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, and exhaustion may be warning signs of dehydration. Setting a timer on your phone or mobile device can be a useful reminder to take a break and hydrate. All our companies usually do a decent job of providing resources to ensure proper hydration.

Communication is defined as the act of transmitting ideas through writing or speech – the means to transmit messages between persons. Lack of communication is listed as one of the “Dirty Dozen” within the world of aviation maintenance and is often a top contributor to human factor related incidents. Effective communication requires full attention of the receiver and the transmitter. If there are any doubts, ask questions for clarification. It is a common fact that only 30% of the message may be understood when verbal communication is utilized. Avoid assumptions and enhance the communication process by also utilizing written forms of communications (worksheets, logbooks, checklist, etc.)    

Documentation is a crucial part of our jobs. Proper and correct documentation of work performed must be clear and thorough. Six-digit references in signoffs are the minimum standard in our industry. Effective documentation also applies to reporting safety concerns; details are crucial so that corrective actions can be implemented quickly and efficiently. Time pressures are more prevalent with worker shortages, so remain vigilant in taking the necessary time to practice detailed documentation procedures.

If you have a concern and/or are unsure if you should file a report, your ASAP Representative is the only person to consult with, not supervisor or co-workers. ASAP is confidential and non-punitive if there was no intentional disregard for safety.
