National President Welcomes L3 Technologies MAS at CFB Trenton Aviation Professionals
Oct 07, 2022

October 3, 2022

Welcome L3 Technologies MAS Aviation Professionals:

AMFA is extremely honored that the professionals at L3 Technologies MAS (L3) at Trenton, Ontario have chosen us to represent you as your union. We look forward to starting the collective bargaining process and working to increase the standards in your workplace. The focus of AMFA will be to build the craft/trade, highlight and recognize the importance of aircraft maintenance engineers, aircraft technicians and apprentices (the maintenance group), and occupational support services (OSS). You should be extremely proud of your accomplishment in becoming the first AMFA-represented trade group in Canada. Canada is among the top five most prosperous countries in the world and has a vast unionized workforce that includes more than 100 Aerospace and Defense Contractors, many wanting a trade-specific union like AMFA.

With nearly 100% participation and the outcome of today’s representation election, your workgroup has shown the great strength of unification and the value of an independent craft/trade union. With AMFA, you can now be confident that you are in control of your own destiny as we tackle the goals and fix the many trade-specific problems you have expressed.

Following is a quick synopsis of what to expect next.

AMFA National officers will assist your workgroup at L3, as we review your current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), including the best transition methods for your wages, work rules, pension, health benefits, certification training and development in your trade of aircraft maintenance. While we are in this transition period, we are optimistic that L3 will maintain their professionalism via the status quo of your agreement. If issues do arise, however, please stay professional, perform your work assignment, and grieve later. We will soon be scheduling a meeting with management.

Currently, you have an AMFA-L3 volunteer transition team in place, including an Interim AMFA-L3 Airlines Representative (ALR) who is the main point of contact for your group. The AMFA-L3 ALR oversees the enforcement of your status quo work rules, pay, retirement and benefits, and is a voting member of your Negotiating Committee. There is also an Interim Area Representative who helps the ALR on the floor as well as Interim Shop Representative who administers communications. When the time comes, your Negotiating Committee will consist of your ALR, National officers, legal counsel, an economist, a pension actuary, and a health and welfare actuary, when needed.

In the upcoming weeks you will be receiving a New Member Package containing an Application for Membership and instructions on how to pay membership dues, which are required to become a member in good standing and eligible to attend union meetings, vote on the contract and letter of agreement ratification, and vote for Local and National officers and representatives. Your dues will be used to support your elected AMFA-L3 representatives on the property as well as resources used for your negotiations, grievances, and arbitration cases, and to advocate for your trade.

With your help, the future belongs to craft/trade focused unions where your dues are solely allocated to AMEs and Related professionals specific trade, while creating appreciation for, and fully monetize, the value tradespeople contribute to a successful business and aircraft maintenance operation.

We thank you for your support. Be sure to call on us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Bret Oestreich
National President
