Honolulu, HI – Sep 15, 2026 – AMFA recently had the privilege of visiting the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum’s Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Program located on historic Ford Island. This innovative initiative enables high school students to complete their comprehensive aviation maintenance training prior to high school graduation, creating a direct pipeline into professional workforce opportunities. The program's inaugural cohort of 8 students is currently on track to graduate and complete their certification requirements in May 2027.

During the visit, AMFA Director of Government Affairs Rob Cush met with Cy Nishihira, Senior Program Manager, to discuss practical ways AMFA can support these aspiring technicians. To assist with their transition into the industry:

• AMFA Scholarship Support: AMFA has officially invited all 8 students in this inaugural class to apply for 1 of 3 AMFA Scholarships available in 2027. This financial aid will help cover the costs associated with Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) testing.

• Travel Assistance Initiatives: Recognizing the geographical challenges faced by island students, AMFA is reaching out to Alaska Airlines to explore potential partnerships to support students who must travel to the mainland for specialized testing and certifications.

While on the island, Cush was interviewed by a local news station to highlight the critical nationwide Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) shortage. He emphasized how severe technician shortfalls impact island aviation operations—a vital lifeline for commerce, travel, and emergency services that Hawaii relies upon every day.

Upcoming Leadership Visit: AMFA will return to Ford Island in early 2027. Cush plans to bring the AMFA National President along for this follow-up visit to see firsthand the outstanding work being done by the instructors, staff, and future mechanics at this facility.

The dedication of the team at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and the quality of training provided will undoubtedly position these students for successful careers in aviation maintenance.
