Fear vs. Facts: What Really Happens When You Change Unions
Dec 26, 2025

December 26, 2025

Dear AMFA-ASA Members,

The IAM is engaged in an ugly effort to scare Hawaiian Team Members into voting its way --specifically, by suggesting that a vote for AMFA could lead to homelessness, job loss or forced relocations.

Do not be misled by fear-based messaging. Here are three important things to know:

1. Changing unions does not put your job at risk.

Under federal law, when Employees change unions, their existing negotiated job security provisions remain in effect as part of the contractual status quo subject to future re-negotiation. The principal change is which union is serving you.

2. The current IAM contract already allows outsourcing.

Despite its fear-based claims, the IAM contract provides limited scope protection. For example, the IAM has agreed, that at “any station away from the State of Hawaii the Company may contract out work necessary to operate and service aircraft.” This language already exposes IAM Members to risk today.

3. AMFA has a proven record of stronger job security.

AMFA’s LOA #9 provides the “Company will not reduce in force, furlough and/or lay off any Employee covered by the CBA at the date of ratification.” In addition, LOA #9 clarifies that its Job Security protection restricts the Company from forcing covered Employees to move work locations.

This language has been proven to be highly effective. For example, during COVID—one of the most severe industry downturns in history—AMFA enforced LOA #9 through expedited arbitration. This prevented a single furlough and protected its Members’ jobs.  It is this level of protection that AMFA will seek to extend to you.

The bottom line: Fear is not a strategy; facts are. AMFA offers demonstrated, enforceable job protections—and that is the level of security AMFA will fight to bring to you.

AMFA respects its Members and future Members, and is proud to deliver you the truth. We look forward to welcoming you as AMFA Members in 2026.

In Solidarity,

AMFA National
