Air Canada TechOps: Employees denounce a blockage of their right to choose their union representation
More than 15 months after their decision, legal challenges continue to delay the process.

Montreal, Quebec -- April 30, 2026 -- Unionized employees from Air Canada’s TechOps division will hold a peaceful demonstration on Thursday, April 30, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Montreal–Trudeau Airport (YUL), near the terminal entrance.

The purpose of this demonstration is to raise public awareness about an ongoing situation: the fundamental right of unionized employees to choose their union representation remains unresolved due to prolonged delays before federal bodies and legal actions initiated by the union they seek to leave.

More than 15 months ago, our members chose to change unions to AMFA by following the process set out in law. Since then, their democratic choice has been challenged, including through legal actions initiated by the union they seek to leave, which have had the effect of delaying the outcome of the process, while their elected representatives have been sidelined and replaced.

Employees, currently represented by IAMAW, also wish to highlight what they perceive as a lack of respect for their internal democratic structures, raising serious concerns about the legitimacy of the current representation.

In this context, unionized employees believe it is inappropriate to engage workers in a major labour dispute while their fundamental right to choose their union representation remains under litigation, despite a clearly expressed majority.

“For us, this is about democracy and respect for our voice,” participants said.

According to documents filed in court proceedings, potential losses of approximately $500,000 per month in union dues have been cited in the event of a change in representation, raising questions about the motivations behind ongoing legal actions.

This demonstration is intended to remain peaceful and informative. Participants aim to bring visibility to their situation and emphasize the importance of respecting workers’ choice.
