National Director's January 2014 Update
Jan 31, 2014

Dear Members:

January started right off with the negotiations resuming at Southwest Airlines (SWA) for the Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMT) and the following week with the Facility Maintenance Technicians. Updates have been posted for both groups and additional dates are scheduled in February. The next session for the AMT negotiations is scheduled for the week of February 10; please pay particular attention to the next update as our Committee plans to make sure the record is straight as it pertains to the status of our ongoing negotiations. Please contact your local Airline Representative for observer opportunities.

The SWA Labor Summit met on January 23 at SWAPA’s headquarters in Dallas. AMFA was in attendance, along with most of the other labor groups on property. After an introduction of individual issues, many frank discussions were had including concern regarding the Company’s current handling of the labor contracts and their insistence on achieving cost neutral versions. There was also discussion and agreement about the labor groups being united as the Company’s offensive continues. In a show of solidarity, all labor groups entered the SWA Quarterly Meeting, hosted by Gary Kelly, together in one large group. We look forward to attending the next meeting in April.

At Alaska Airlines we are still waiting for the Company to schedule dates so we can continue our discussions for possible clarifications to the Annual Wage Review process as outlined in Article 23, Wage Rules. Also, the Airline Representatives have requested that the Company provide the Union with the data they used to vet the new facility maintenance vendor as required in Article 2, Scope so we can determine if there is a viable argument that we should return the work to our members.

This month I was able to attend both the Local 14 and Local 32 membership meetings in person, and I was also able to “zoom” into Local 4’s meetings using Zoom virtual meeting software. This software is a great tool that allows multiple locations to attend and participate via live video feed. At the Joint Advisory Council meeting next month, Local 4 will be sharing their experiences with this innovative concept.

Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – Please stay informed. Remember, “Safety in the air begins with quality maintenance on the ground.”
