Prior to this meeting, AMFA proposed a Letter of Agreement (LOA) by e-mail to Spirit Airlines that would have memorialized the status quo in compensation, 401(k) and work rules, created a just cause provision and grievance process, as well as a dues checkoff provision to easier facilitate the payment of dues to support collective bargaining. Simply put, Spirit said no to a short-term LOA that would have demonstrated its commitment to the hard-working AMTs while a CBA is negotiated.

May 31, 2022 -- In a recent conversation, a Spirit maintenance employee expressed concern relating to a management directive that appeared to be inconsistent with the terms of the General Maintenance Manual (GMM). |
May 24, 2002 -- We are in receipt of reports from Mechanics and Related Employees at Spirit Airlines that they have been subject to threatening comments constituting a violation of the “laboratory conditions” that a carrier is required to maintain during an NMB-supervised election. Specifically, witnesses have reported to us that, on May 18, 2022, Spirit Airlines Director of Maintenance Operations Control Vincent Giudice told employees that “unions are bad for you” and that, in the event a union is certified, “if you commit a fireable offense, we have no reason to be lax about it – you’re fired.”
May 10, 2022 -- On May 6, 2022, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (“AMFA”) filed an application to represent the Spirit Airlines’ (“Spirit”) Mechanics and Related Employees together with signed authorization cards from a substantial majority of Spirit AMTs. |
May 6, 2022 -- The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (“AMFA”) filed Authorization for Representation cards today with the National Mediation Board (NMB) on behalf of the Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (“AMTs”) and Related Employees at Spirit Airlines. “AMFA is thrilled the AMTs and Related Employees at Spirit Airlines have placed their faith in us to act as their union representative,” said Bret Oestreich, AMFA National President. “Their confidence in our abilities to represent them is evidenced by AMFA now having signed authorization cards from significantly more than 50% of the craft or class at Spirit Airlines. In fact, the number of signed authorization cards filed by AMFA is sufficient to be a majority of the craft or class at a combined Spirit-Frontier carrier.
With Spirit Airlines facing the possibility of a merger or acquisition, having union representation is more important than ever. Why? Because a seniority integration process is in your future; a process that will impact every aspect of your working life: access to travel benefits, your shift and days off, the station where you work, and - in the event of furloughs - your job security.
April 7, 2022 -- We’re honored and we want to thank you for placing your confidence in the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA). Your grassroots organizing efforts and collection of Authorization for Representation cards in favor of AMFA is still ongoing with favorable interest and results. We have written to you before about the career impacts arising from the merger of two carriers and most of you responded – AMFA now has signed authorization cards from over 50% of the Aviation Maintenance Technicians of Spirit Airlines. In fact, the number of cards signed by Spirit AMTs would constitute a majority of AMTs at a combined Spirit-Frontier carrier.
February 21, 2020 -- First, I would like to thank you for placing your confidence in the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA). Your grassroots organizing efforts and collection of Authorization for Representation cards from your workgroup in favor of AMFA is still ongoing with favorable interest and results. We are honored and promise to work hard on your behalf if you continue to collect Authorization for Representation cards under the Railway Labor Act (RLA) and should you choose AMFA as your collective bargaining agent when the times come to vote.

December 11, 2019 -- On the heels of having won its representational election at Horizon Air, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) announced that a union card drive has begun at Spirit Airlines — the self-proclaimed ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Miramar, Florida. While it is unusual for AMFA to publicize card drive initiatives, given that the Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) at Spirit Airlines are currently non-unionized, it is important to build awareness that this significant initiative is underway.
