National Director's May 2016 Update
May 31, 2016

May 31, 2016

Dear Members:

During the first week of May we held our National Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. Delegates debated member submitted proposed amendments to the AMFA Constitution and approved a total of sixteen (16) proposals that will now be sent to the membership for consideration and ratification. The delegates also submitted their Local’s nominees for the National Officer election, which will take place this summer. Watch your mail closely for important information regarding both votes, and please be sure to participate.

The second week of May the Alaska Airlines contract negotiations continued in Seattle, Washington. This session we worked on the Classification of Work, Overtime, Holidays, Training, Vacations, and Sick Leave articles; the Committee’s full update has been posted to the National Website. Our next session is scheduled for May 31 – June 2, 2016, in the Bay Area of California where we expect to work on Scope, Status, and Job Security. There have been no new developments in the proposed Alaska Airlines purchase of Virgin America, and we will keep you posted as new developments transpire.

Also during the second week of May, we continued our contentious mediated negotiations for the Southwest Airlines (SWA) Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) contract in Dallas, Texas. This session we focused primarily on the Maintenance Controller issues. Our next session is scheduled for July 26–28, 2016, in Dallas, Texas. Please be sure to read the Committees’ full update on the AMFA National Website, including the closing paragraph that details our notifying SWA of their failure to satisfy the obligations of the Railway Labor Act to bargain in good faith to “make and maintain agreements” as required by the Act.

On May 18, 2016, twenty-eight (28) AMFA–SWA members from Local 4, Local 11, and AMFA National proudly joined the Southwest pilots and flight attendants in a show of labor solidarity at the SWA annual shareholder meeting in downtown Chicago. "It was a momentous occasion where mechanics joined with pilots and flight attendants to express our extreme displeasure with the pace of negotiations at SWA," said Justin Madden, National Secretary/Treasurer. "We work with these folks every day, and are honored to stand together in an effort to bring more attention to our respective plights."

For more carrier-specific updates and further information regarding AMFA and the airline industry, please visit the AMFA National Website at www.AMFANational.org and download the AMFA App to your smartphone or tablet. Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.

Sincerely,

Louie Key
National Director
