I want to encourage you to recognize the importance of the responsibilities and work you perform day to-day: increase awareness of performing your jobs safely; maintaining compliance; being aware of your surroundings; and above all, working safely side-by-side with your co-workers.
This month several new local officers and representatives were sworn in to office. Congratulations to Local 4 ALR Dan Burgess, Local 4 Vice President Tom Hagan, Local 4 Safety & Standards Chairman Louie Upchurch, Local 14 Safety & Standards Chairman Matt Luedtke, Local 14 Secretary Nic Kula, and Local 32 President Rui Leonardo. I appreciate the new officers for stepping up and pursuing the goal of representing every member the best we can.
A sincere thank you to the outgoing leaders: Local 4 ALR Bob Cramer, Local 4 Vice President Scott Van de Motter, Local 4 Safety & Standards Chairman Pat Amore, Local 14 President Keith Jenkins, Local 14 Secretary Cameron DeBoer, Local 14 Safety & Standards Chairman Tracy Hoirup, and Local 32 President Frank Amore. I thank these leaders for their years of involvement, dedication, professionalism, and continued support of the Association while in office as well as during the transition of their duties and responsibilities.
There have also been some changes in the upper Management VP Labor Relations and Maintenance & Engineering Departments at Alaska Airlines (AS). Despite these changes, your AMFA–AS Negotiating Committee continues moving forward to find a mutual agreement to bring our two workgroups together and we are anticipating future meeting dates. Your AMFA–SWA Negotiating Committee met with the Mediator and the Company on January 24-25 in Dallas, TX. We were hopeful – for our member’s sake – the Company would respond in similar fashion to our November streamlined proposal and focus on reaching a deal that could promptly be voted upon and not open any other major asks or articles. Unfortunately, and regrettably, the Company’s major “regressive asks” are at the brink of fully opening Pandora’s box. Southwest Airlines came back with a counter proposal with two more additional asks:
1) Requested allowing international outsourcing vendor
2) Not to exceed 16 hour duty day
The Company has altered its position by 180 degrees, and asked for changes to foreign outsourcing and work rules as two of the “major offsets” in its most recent January 24, 2019, proposal. The full details of the Company’s proposal can be found in Negotiations Update #71. We will be meeting in Dallas, TX on February 8–9, 2019.
