National Director Update - January 2020
Apr 02, 2020

February 17, 2020

Dear Members:

I hope each of you had a happy and safe 2020 New Year’s celebration. Reflecting on back in 2019, we take great pride in our Association’s many hurdles and achievements, specifically in the arenas of concluding more than seven years of negotiations at Southwest Airlines with a solid contract, growth with the certification at Horizon Air and the single carrier status determination at Alaska Airlines, legislative successes, workforce development initiatives, and most importantly, continuing to raise the standards and recognition of our craft. We are forging into 2020 continuing where we left off, setting goals and furthering the Association and our craft in the industry.

The year kicked off with the NEC, Local 14, and Local 32 representatives performing station visits January 8-20 to welcome new Alaska members to AMFA and to answer many questions. Stations visited were: SFO, JFK, LAX, SAN, LAS, PDX, and SEA. We would like to thank all the individuals who helped in security escorts and assisting with temporary visitor badges for all the stations. Please monitor the Alaska Airlines News and Updates page of the AMFA National website for further details.

Local 14 will be conducting an election to fill the position of Horizon Air Airline Representative in February 2020. Horizon members should make sure you have a personal email address on file with AMFA in order to receive voting details expediently. Reminder, voting materials will not be sent to company email addresses. Additionally, thank you all to all who have volunteered to represent your work group. Please monitor the Horizon Air News and Updates page of the AMFA National website for most up-to-date information for your group.

AMFA and Southwest Airlines are currently in the process of updating the SWA ASAP MOU; the FAA has extended the current MOU and we will provide more details when they come available. We urge you to be aware of the situation around you while performing your job and duties.

Understand, Southwest is still dedicated to the two Federal lawsuits against AMFA and AMFA representatives.  In essence, over the last seven years management has waged war against its own employees, both in court with lawsuits and disciplining employees, for reporting aircraft discrepancies and safety concerns. AMFA does not want to be in court or in battle addressing the degradation of safety culture in the workplace. Instead, we want to move forward partnering with Southwest. We will continue updating you via the secure Legal Updates (Members Only) page of the National website as developments unfold.

The AMFA National Convention convenes on May 4, 2020. Each Local has been busy preparing for the big event as they have recently concluded Local Delegate and National Officer Run-off elections. Each Local was also responsible for collecting Constitution Amendment Proposal Forms from their respective members and then submitting them to the Rules Committee in January 2020, for their review prior to the opening of the Convention. AMFA is membership driven and this is the membership’s opportunity to be directly involved in shaping the foundation of our Association.

The NEC continues to strive for the best communication practices to reach our membership. Tools are in place for our members to acquire news and updates regarding current events throughout the Association via the National website, AMFA App, and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Thank you for your continued support in this membership outreach and communication campaign. We will also continue to conduct station and GMM visits system-wide.

Reminder to All Members: The FAA Hotline reporting system may be utilized to report concerns of aviation safety: https://hotline.faa.gov. We must realize our grave responsibility as FAA certified airman to exercise our judgement on the airworthiness of aircraft and equipment. We, therefore, pledge unyielding adherence to these precepts for the advancement of public safety of aviation and for the dignity for our craft.

As always, I ask you please be safe and to stay engaged with your union and officers. For more carrier specific updates and further information regarding AMFA and the airline industry, please visit the AMFA National Website at www.amfanational.org. Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.

Sincerely,

Bret Oestreich
National Director
