SWA’s Unfortunate Travel Meltdown
Dec 29, 2022

December 29, 2022

By now, everyone is aware of the extraordinary challenges Southwest Airlines has experienced during the recent delays and cancelations across the country. We are extremely saddened by this catastrophic event that has affected thousands of SWA passengers/families during this holiday season and left the SWA flight crews displaced around the country with non-existent and/or limited accommodations. The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) Officers representing the Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMTs), Aircraft Maintenance Controllers, Aircraft Appearance Technicians (AAT), Technical Trainers, and Facility Maintenance Technicians (FMTs) are working together in continued communication with Southwest Airlines management in technical operations to address these problems and return scheduling and maintenance operations back to normal. Our technicians all across the country are working 24/7 to inspect, maintain and repair the Southwest Airlines fleet to maximize the planes available to fly and help all our customers get home safely and quickly.

Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) has stated for years this SWA “Meltdown” was in the forecast, SWAPA President Captain Casey Murray most recently stated on November 14, 2022 “I fear that we are one Thunderstorm, one ATC event, one router blowout away from a complete meltdown. Whether that’s Thanksgiving, or Christmas, or the New Year, that’s the precarious situation we are in.” As a stakeholder, AMFA is also committed to working with Southwest management to review and analyze the system and process challenges that made such a large-scale meltdown possible so that we might avoid a similar situation in the future. Our AMFA membership is committed to doing its part in helping remedy solutions to this unfortunate meltdown while providing a safe and reliable aircraft for the flying public and our crews to reach their final destinations.
