Toolbox Talk: Pressure
May 05, 2026

May 5, 2026

Pressure shows up in different ways—tight schedules, delays, management expectations, and the standards we put on ourselves. Over time, “get it done” can start to replace “do it right.” That shift is where risk begins.

In aviation, pressure doesn’t just speed things up—it cuts corners. Rushed work, skipped steps, and overlooked procedures are often the result. Regulations exist to take time pressure out of safety-critical decisions. The moment pressure starts driving the job instead of procedure, the margin for error disappears.

We’ve seen this play out before. During the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster (1986), engineers raised concerns about O-rings in cold weather—but schedule pressure won. In the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster (2003), foam strikes were normalized after previous “successful” flights, and risk was underestimated. Different events, same pattern: pressure, acceptance of risk, and ultimately, loss of life.

Maintenance is no different. The push to meet departure times or keep operations moving can quietly influence decisions—cutting an inspection short, deferring a step, or convincing yourself it’s “good enough.” It never is.

The hazard: Rushing to meet expectations.

Shortcuts might save minutes—but they can cost careers, certificates, and lives.

Takeaway:

Schedules are flexible. Regulations are not. If something isn’t right, stop and address it—no matter the pressure. The consequences will follow you home.

AMT Focus:

You own your signature. If something goes wrong, the investigation won’t focus on the pressure—it will focus on you.
