National Director's June 2015 Update
Jul 03, 2015

June 30, 2015

Dear Members:

All of the Local Presidents, Assistant National Director, Region I Director and Co-Chairman of the Southwest Airlines (SWA) Negotiating Committee, and I met this month in Dallas, Texas to discuss, among other things, the growing frustration in regard to the ongoing SWA Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) negotiations and SWA’s general attitude toward our workgroups. We are angry at the Company’s willingness to violate our contract forcing us to rigorously defend the agreement in arbitration. We are unanimous in our resolve to support our Negotiating Committee and our Airline Representatives as they continue our negotiations and enforce our collective bargaining agreement. I wrote a letter to Mr. Gary Kelly, SWA President and CEO, expressing our discontentment and requested that he, and other appropriate Company leadership, engage in our negotiations and help facilitate a successful resolution.

Meanwhile, SWA negotiations continued this month; the Facilities Maintenance Technician (FMT) negotiations were on June 23, 2015, and the Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) negotiations were on June 24, 2015. Disappointingly, but not surprisingly, negotiations made no real and meaningful progress during these two sessions. The Company had indicated to our Committee that there would be substantial progress made during these rounds of talks in the FMT negotiations; however, the Company failed to deliver on their promises and negotiations continued at a snail’s pace as the Company dragged the process along. The Negotiating Committee’s updates have been posted to the AMFA National Website. Your Committee is working hard on your behalf and is exploring every option to move the process forward.

At Alaska Airlines, both Local 14 and Local 32 have completed the endorsement process for their membership-submitted contract proposals. The next step will be for the locals to combine identical, or very similar, proposals onto a single list that will be distributed to the membership for conducting an online survey so the members can rank the proposals in order of priority for the Negotiating Committee. The combination process is in work and we anticipate that the proposal survey will start in July.

Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.

Sincerely,

Louie Key
National Director
