National Director's September 2015 Update
Oct 01, 2015

September 30, 2015

Dear Members:

On Wednesday, September 2, 2015, we held a Joint Advisory Council Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. The National Executive Council, all Local Presidents, Airline Representatives from both Alaska and Southwest Airlines, and several member observers attended to discuss Association issues. Agenda items included an array of topics including legislative priorities, contract negotiations, grievance database software opportunities, carrier specific concerns, and the upcoming National Convention next spring. Please speak with your local representatives for more information.

On Thursday, September 10, 2015, we held our first meeting for Southwest Airlines (SWA) Aircraft Maintenance Technician negotiations with Senior Mediator, Patricia Sims and Mediator, Catherine McCann from the National Mediation Board (NMB). We were informed that Mediator McCann will be the lead mediator for our negotiations. Our Negotiation Committee has posted a full update regarding this meeting on the National and Local websites. The NMB has scheduled our first session for November 30 – December 2, 2015, in Dallas, Texas. We are excited to start the process and to work on reaching a tentative agreement (TA). This month the SWA pilots announced that they have reached a TA in their negotiations, and it will be sent to their members for a ratification vote shortly. Also this month, Delta Airlines announced that they are giving a majority of their employees, including technicians, a 14.5% pay increase. I expect these developments to have a very positive influence on our negotiations as well.

There were no negotiations this month for the SWA Facility Maintenance Technicians, and we are now waiting on the Company to get back to us on proposed dates. Our Committee will be prepared to present our counter to the Company’s economic proposal when the next session takes place.

At Alaska Airlines we have scheduled the Article 23, Par. R, Annual Wage Review for October 6, 2015. We have not yet scheduled the dates to meet with the Company to discuss their offer to “…consider the possibility of opening discussions of an extension of the current agreement.” We still plan on filing our Section 6 Negotiations Notice to the Company in October. As stated above, the Delta wage increases will be relevant to these discussions as well.

September 22 – 25, 2015, AMFA successfully hosted the Aircraft Engineers International 43rd Annual Congress in Seattle, Washington. Delegates from across the world attended and presented information on how they are working to uphold safety and protect the licensed aircraft maintenance technicians’ interests domestically and internationally. Several industry expert guest speakers shared their perspective on the future of aircraft maintenance and the challenges we face. There were over 20 delegates from 11 countries represented.

For more carrier specific updates and further information regarding AMFA and the airline industry, please visit the AMFA National Website at www.AMFANational.org and download the AMFA App to your smartphone. Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.
