Each AMFA represented airline has a robust Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP). ASAP was created to encourage voluntary reporting of safety information that helps to identify issues that could lead to an accident or incident. By utilizing an ASAP, issues are addressed by corrective action rather than punishment or discipline, and participation in the program is voluntary and non-punitive.
When an AMFA member chooses to file an ASAP report, it is reviewed by the Event Review Committee (ERC), which is comprised by three-parties: AMFA, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the company. The ERC reviews the report and then decides whether to accept or reject it into the Program. Generally, reports involving “the big five,” including criminal activity, substance abuse, controlled substances, alcohol, or intentional falsification, will be grounds for rejection; however, contents from rejected reports involving “the big five” may be used by the FAA and/or the company for their own investigation. If the ERC reaches a consensus to accept the report, a course of corrective action will be decided upon. This description of how the ERC processes reports is much abbreviated and is not all inclusive of the entire process. For more information, please reference the FAA Advisory Circular 120-66C.
As an AMFA member, YOU have a representative that can be utilized within the ASAP; however, it requires YOU to initiate contact with them when you have questions or concerns. The AMFA ASAP ERC Representative is the only person you should consult if you are considering using the Program. Company management has no discretion on who files an ASAP report, the decision is entirely up to the AMFA Member.
