Alaska & Hawaiian Acquisition and Merger - Which Union Will Prioritize My Interests?
Oct 16, 2024

September 26, 2024

IAM is an industrial union.  AMFA has always been a craft union.

Tension has developed in labor history between industrial and craft unions due to their extreme differences in core values and focus. Industrial unions are focused on member number growth and leadership enrichment at the expense of their members’ trades. Craft unions are dedicated to members with specific skills and workforces.

In this case, the difference between the two unions is stark. AMFA solely represents the Aircraft Maintenance workforce within class and craft. Because of this, AMFA has a vested interest in fighting for contracts and causes directly impacting Aircraft Maintenance throughout the industry. IAM represents aircraft technicians; however, they also represent automotive, government, paper makers, electronics, and woodworkers.  Their focus has always been more membership.

Their International President is a PIPEFITTER.  AMFA’s National President, Bret Oestreich is an AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN. Who is going to fight harder for you? The answer is obvious – AMFA!

You, as an A&P, are skilled and specialized. There is massive incentive for you to be represented by a group that values you as an isolated workforce as your job will be more valued by negotiators that also hold your license. EVERYONE who is an elected official for AMFA falls in the class and craft of Aircraft Maintenance Technician/Engineer.

As industries evolve, the demand for skilled labor increases, and recognizing the value of specific crafts becomes essential. The future of labor representation may depend on how well unions adapt to their members' unique needs, emphasizing service and advocacy over membership growth.

We are asking the Alaska AMTs to move forward in this merger with AMFA – the Union that is run by the members democratically and puts their interests first. Do not fall for the IAM propaganda. It is a continuation of their lies and distorted reality. Let their track record as an industrial union speak for them. Please review the IAM track record by reading, The Truth Behind The 2005–2006 Northwest Airlines & AMFA Strike.

Please contact an AMFA LEC or NEC Officer with any questions related to this acquisition. Please continue to monitor the Alaska Airlines page of the AMFA National website for latest updates as well as communications related to the 2017-2019 Alaska Airlines acquisition and merger with Virgin America.

Fraternally,

Bret Oestreich, National President
Nic Kula, Local 14 President
Rui Leonardo, Local 32 President
